What is Organic Food?

14 Feb

Organic Fruits and Vegetables

These are the ones grown from seeds which are not genetically modified, in a soil rich in nutrients, without the addition of chemical fertilizers. Crops are not sprayed with synthetic chemicals like pesticides and neither irradiation or gas are used.

There have been some studies which demonstrate that harmful pesticides are stored in greater quantities in people consuming conventional produce, as opposed to those consuming organics.

Organic Livestock

Animals have to be born and raised on organic land and fed organic. They are hormone and drug free. Antibiotics can only be given during an infectious outbreak.

Make sure when buying organic meats, eggs and dairy that they are also free range, this means the animals are not confined, they spend time outdoors.

So is organic better?

Of course it is! Nutrition-wise and also because we are not eating the chemicals, additives, hormones, drugs, pesticides, and genetically modified components. I believe organic is good for the planet as well.

So… give organic food a chance, I am convinced you will never go back.

Eat healthy, be happy!

RFD

This restaurant is like a healing food center!

It’s fantastic, 90 percent of the food served comes from organic, local farmers. Completely free of preservatives, processed and refined foods.

Everything is made from fresh and whole ingredients; vegetables, fruits, seeds, beans, grains and soy products.

You can never go wrong here, order anything from the menu, it’s all delicious, healthy, and as they say “clean and pure.”

RFD is also environmentally conscious, they use biodegradable containers, they are part of a local composting program and certified as a green business!

My favorite item on the menu is the Real Food Plate, it’s a complete meal with brown rice, beans, vegetables, salad and a fresh homemade dressing, delicious!

Check out the menu here

They have 2 locations West Hollywood and Santa Monica

If you haven’t been to RFD check it out!

It is definitely one of the best restaurants in LA!

Food and Beauty

26 Jan

An article published by the Journal of Skin Pharmacology and Physiology concluded that an encapsulated fruit and vegetable concentrate, helps skin be healthier and therefore age less.

The study consisted in taking a fruit and vegetable concentrate daily for 12 weeks. After the 12 weeks the subjects skin was evaluated and the results were:

  • Increase in the skin’s circulation by 39%
  • Hydration by 9%
  • Skin thickness 6%
  • Skin density 16%

You may be wondering where to get this concentrate from, no need to look for any. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and preparing your own juices everyday will probably achieve the same results (I haven’t tested this theory, but I am pretty sure!). Always include lots of greens and a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables.

Eat healthy, be happy and as proven recently, beautiful  and young as well!

Elimination Diet: Top 5

23 Jan

We are starting a new week and recently a new year, so why not start a new diet?

Try eliminating the following foods from your diet during this week, I can bet you will feel so great you’ll want to keep eating this way.

These are the top 5 foods to avoid this week:

  • Sugar or any sugar substitute
  • Processed foods
  • Dairy
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine

Make sure to add plenty of these:

  • Water (at least 8 glasses per day)
  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains, legumes and seeds
  • Lots of leafy greens
  • Vegetable and fruit juices (prepared by yourself)

Remember you are what you eat, eat healthy, be happy…

From the Farm to your Home

12 Jan

I’ve just received my box full of fresh fruits and vegetables from Farm Fresh to You.

Once a week you can get a box with healthy, organic produce delivered to your door. It’s a great way to start eating healthy and since everything is picked daily and delivered fresh, it holds all the nutrients.

I know there’s a few options all around the U.S., I’ve heard of Urban Organic in NYC and Aires de Campo in Mexico City.

Go online and search for your city, if you can’t find this kind of service I recommend you start buying at farmer’s markets, they have very fresh produce as well. Always try to look for organic and in season options.

And remember… You are what you eat!
